One photo of Otis sitting upright on his kitchen chair, and the template convenes the rest: a neighbour's tabby, somebody's beagle, a very serious rabbit, all seated formally around MY kitchen table in the dark — and Otis, unmistakably Otis, chairing from the head. Nobody has notes; nothing is ever written down. It explains the crumbs, the moved cushion, everything. Tweak: 'the goldfish attends in its bowl, on a stack of books.'
